BEIJING, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli tightened his grip on the 2026 Formula 1 title race with a composed victory in Sunday's Miami Grand Prix, holding off McLaren's Lando Norris to secure a third consecutive win and extend his championship lead to 20 points.

In a race that threatened rain but ultimately stayed dry, strategy and execution proved decisive. Antonelli and Norris were closely matched throughout, swapping the lead in the early phases after having overtaken the fast-starting Ferrari of Charles Leclerc. But once the pit window opened, the balance swung firmly toward Mercedes.

Antonelli, who had already built momentum with wins in Japan and China, again demonstrated a knack for delivering when it mattered most. Despite another sluggish start from pole, a recurring weakness this season, he stayed within striking distance and positioned himself perfectly for the race-defining moment.

That came on lap 26, when Mercedes called Antonelli in for his only stop, committing to the undercut. Norris pitted a lap later, and although McLaren's stop was clean, a slightly slower out lap and Antonelli's tyres already up to temperature left the pair side by side at pit exit. The Mercedes driver edged ahead and, crucially, made it stick through the flowing Esses.

From there, the contest settled into a tense rhythm. Norris remained within a second for several laps, probing but unable to find a way through on a track that punishes even the smallest error. A brief concern over Antonelli's paddle shift system threatened to complicate matters, but the Italian gradually stretched the gap to cross the line 3.2s ahead of Norris.

"The pace was strong," Antonelli said. "The team did a great strategy, we did a massive undercut and managed to bring it home. It wasn't easy, but we made it work."

Norris's hopes faded further when McLaren warned him of a potential rear wing issue late on, forcing a more cautious approach.

"We just got undercut, no excuses," rued Norris, who had won Saturday's Sprint event. "Kimi did a good job. I'm gutted to miss out on a win here, I think it was possible today."

Behind them, the fight for the final podium spot provided late drama. Oscar Piastri completed an encouraging weekend for McLaren by passing Leclerc on the penultimate lap, sealing a double podium for the team after its 1-2 finish in the Sprint.

Leclerc's race unraveled in the closing laps. After losing ground through a slow pit stop, the Ferrari driver spun and clipped the wall while battling back, damaging his car and dropping down the order. A subsequent time penalty for repeated track limits violations compounded the damage, leaving the Monegasque with a disappointing eighth-place finish from a race he had briefly led.

George Russell salvaged fourth for Mercedes after a difficult weekend in which he struggled for balance, at one stage complaining over the radio that he was "four-wheel sliding everywhere." Though he passed both Max Verstappen's Red Bull and the wounded Leclerc in a chaotic final lap sequence to limit the damage, the Briton has conceded yet more ground to Antonelli in the title race.

Verstappen endured a scrappy afternoon. A spin at Turn 2 on the opening lap while dicing with Leclerc dropped the Dutchman down the order, and an aggressive early switch to hard tyres under a Safety Car left him nursing worn rubber to the finish. He still managed fifth, aided by Leclerc's late troubles, but remains off the pace of the leading Mercedes and McLaren battle.

Lewis Hamilton finished sixth for Ferrari after picking up early damage in a first-lap clash with Alpine's Franco Colapinto, who nonetheless impressed to take seventh and match his best result in F1.

Further down the order, Williams enjoyed a better afternoon with Carlos Sainz ninth and Alex Albon rounding out the points positions in 10th, as the team shows signs of progress following a difficult start to 2026.

The race's only Safety Car period came early after separate incidents involving Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly. Hadjar crashed heavily after taking too much kerb, while Gasly's car was flipped into the barriers following contact with Liam Lawson, briefly neutralising the race and shuffling strategies.

Following his third win on the trot, Antonelli now has 100 points, 20 more than second-placed Russell, with Leclerc third on 59 points despite a difficult day.

In the Constructors' standings, Mercedes leads the way on 180 points, ahead of Ferrari on 110, and an improving McLaren on 94 points.

The next round of the 2026 F1 season is the Canadian Grand Prix at Montreal, on May 24. ■
