Analysis: Four things we learned in Spain's matchday 34

MADRID, May 4 (Xinhua) -- FC Barcelona and Real Madrid both won their La Liga matches at the weekend, with Real Madrid's 2-0 win away to Espanyol keeping the title race alive and setting up the possibility of a decisive finish at Camp Nou. Here are some of the things we learned in Spain this weekend.

1. Camp Nou to decide the title?

Barcelona's hard-fought win away to Osasuna put the pressure on Real Madrid to keep the title race alive for another week and also avoid having to give Barcelona a guard of honor in next Sunday's Clasico.

Real Madrid responded with a 2-0 win away to Espanyol on Sunday night, with two excellent goals from Vinicius Jr securing the victory.

With a lead of 11 points and 12 still to play for, Barcelona can seal the title next Sunday with just a draw at home to its biggest rival. It looks like the perfect scenario for Barcelona, but it also gives Real Madrid the chance to spoil the party, at least for another week.

2. Marcelino leads Villarreal to Champions League ahead of probable departure

Villarreal's 5-1 home win over Levante secured a quick return to the Champions League after this season's disappointment in the tournament.

Marcelino Garcia Toral's side has been highly effective in attack and solid in defense all season, with the coach's preferred 4-4-2 system working to great effect.

Despite that success, Marcelino looks set to leave the club this summer, and his words, "when we arrived we had several aims... my future has been clear for a while now," sounded more like a farewell than something many will understand.

3. The kids are alright

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone made sweeping changes to the side that played in Valencia on Saturday, with an eye on Tuesday's Champions League semifinal second leg away to Arsenal.

Four B-team players, Javier Bonar, Julio Diaz, Javier Morcillo and Rayane Belaid, were in the starting lineup, while Iker Luque and Cubo came on as substitutes and scored the goals that gave Atletico a 2-0 win.

The result may partly have reflected the nerves of a Valencia side battling relegation and again booed by its own fans, but after being the biggest spenders in Spain over the past two years, Atletico could do well to look to its B team for some of its future stars.

4. Life is easier when stars shine

It has been a difficult season for Athletic Bilbao, whose fans and players expected another campaign challenging for Europe, only to see the team struggle for form and results.

Athletic Bilbao has suffered 16 league defeats after losing only six last season, and one reason is that key players Oihan Sancet, Nico and Inaki Williams, and Dani Vivian have all seen a dip in form, in Nico's case because of injury.

Sancet and Nico showed what had been missing as they led Athletic to a 4-2 win over Alaves, with Sancet scoring an excellent second goal and Nico adding the third and fourth.

When your top players perform, it becomes much easier to win games.
